About Crystal Coast Choral Society

Organization Overview

Crystal Coast Choral Society is a nonprofit community choral performance group serving eastern North Carolina. Incorporated in North Carolina, it operates for charitable and educational purposes, recognized as a 501(c)(3) organization, making contributions tax-deductible.

Mission Statement

Our mission is to provide residents of eastern North Carolina an opportunity to perform choral music for the benefit of Onslow County and surrounding areas, while fostering future musicians in the communities served.

Vision

We aim to educate, inspire, and encourage a lifelong love and appreciation for choral singing for both present and future generations.

Grants & Support

The Crystal Coast Choral Society receives sub-grant funding from the North Carolina Department of Natural and Cultural Resources through the Grassroots Arts Program, with additional support from the Jacksonville-Onslow Council for the Arts, emphasizing stewardship and public access to the arts.

Founded in October 1986 as the Swansboro Community Chorus, we expanded arts exposure and presented high-quality concerts with free admission. In December 1987, we became the Crystal Coast Choral Society, Inc., performing a wide range of music from classical to gospel, with notable performances including international tours and collaborations with prestigious organizations.

Under the leadership of Ayumi Nakamae since January 1, 2026, our artistic direction focuses on community enrichment and educational opportunities. Ayumi, a distinguished soprano and voice teacher, is committed to fostering musical talent and appreciation in both the U.S. and Japan.

Community Presence

We present two major concerts each December and two in the spring, along with additional performances throughout the year across coastal and eastern North Carolina, including military installations. Our current membership typically includes 55-65 singers from Onslow, Carteret, and surrounding counties.

Our history reflects a commitment to community engagement and artistic excellence, with performances spanning from the 15th to the 21st centuries, including repeated participation in Handel’s Messiah since 2012.
